You can cancel your American Airlines reservation for a fee. To cancel, you must call the reservations line at least four hours before your scheduled departure and request a cancellation.

If you have already checked in for your flight and have not yet boarded, you will be charged a $200 fee per person. If you have checked in and have already boarded the aircraft, you will be charged a $300 fee per person. If you are traveling with family or friends on a single reservation, all passengers must be present to receive this refund. Any refunds owed to customers will be processed within 14 days of their request.

If you cancel your reservation within 24 hours of departure, there is no fee; however, if you do not check in before 24 hours before departure or fail to show up for the flight without canceling prior to that time, there is still no refund available under any circumstances.

American Airlines Cancellation Deadline

You can cancel your ticket up to 24 hours before departure for a fee of $125 per person for domestic flights and $200 per person for international flights. You will not be charged the cancellation fee if your flight is canceled or rescheduled by American Airlines.

If you need to cancel your ticket after the 24-hour period, you will have up to 72 hours before departure to get a refund minus a $200 fee per person for international flights and $300 per person for domestic flights. After 72 hours in advance of your flight, there is no refund available unless American Airlines cancels or reschedules your flight.
