The “src refspec main does not match any” error usually occurs when you are trying to push a new branch to a remote repository. This error means that the branch you are trying to push does not exist on the remote repository. To fix this error, you need to create a new branch on the remote repository and push your branch to that new branch.

‘’Src Refspec Main does not Match Any’’ Error

Example of “src refspec main does not match any” error

You have a Git repository on a remote server. On your local machine, you have a new branch called new-branch. When you try to push the new-branch to the remote server, you get the following error:

error: Refusing to clone into existing branch; use -f if you wish to force.

Fetching upstream branches…

error: src refspec main does not match any

What causes ”src refspec main does not match any” error?

The “src refspec main does not match any” error is caused by a mismatch between the source and destination refs. This can happen if the source and destination refs are on different branches, or if the destination ref does not exist.  When the git clone command is used, the src ref is automatically created by the origin remote, and the main ref is created by the git-clone script that comes with Git. The main ref is usually set toHEAD. When you run into this error, the easiest way to resolve it is to simply replace the main ref on the source ref with the destination ref.

How to fix ‘src refspec main does not match any’ error?

This error is caused when you attempt to push a branch to a remote repository where a branch with the same name does not exist. To fix this error, you can either create a new branch with the same name on the remote repository, or rename your local branch.

If you decide to rename your local branch, remember that this change will be recorded in your local git repository’s history. To avoid confusing yourself or others in the future, it’s a good idea to incorporate your rename commit into a new topic branch. From there, you can switch to the new branch and push that to the remote repository.
