The Healthcare.gov is the federally funded health insurance exchange site that, together with other enablers such as Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program, is part of a program called the Affordable Care Act, which reformed the U.S. healthcare system with the goal of expanding coverage through private insurance to uninsured Americans while also offsetting the cost over time.

The Affordable Care Act, commonly known as Obamacare, is a law that changed the way health care and health insurance work. It’s estimated to have helped between 20-30 million people get insurance.

Healthcare.gov is the federally facilitated marketplace through which individuals who don’t have access to medical insurance through their employer can purchase coverage. It also serves as a hub for information and tools related to enrollment at every stage of the application process, from applying for financial assistance, selecting a plan and enrolling in health coverage through single sign-on, online only experiences that are simple and engaging.

With Healthcare.gov, you can get the information you need and apply for health coverage online. If you are not currently eligible for an affordable healthcare plan through Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), you can enroll in an insurance plan through the Marketplace.
