The official language of Wales is Welsh, although English is also spoken. Since the late 16th century it has been the main language of the country, but at present over half the population are fluent speakers only.

The official language of Wales is called Cymraeg and has been spoken for a long time by the Welsh people – for about 2,000 years. In fact, the oldest texts in English are written in the Welsh language! Today it has grown to be an important part of the culture and heritage of Wales. It is one of two official languages in Wales (the other is English) and we use it every day to talk about many different things including jobs and education. It has been spoken since at least around 1800 BC by communities along the western coast of Britain. At that time, Ireland and Great Britain were part of the same island but divided into fiercely independent kingdoms.

The Welsh language (Cymraeg) is the official language of Wales. It became so in 1977 when it, along with English, was listed as part of the official name of the National Assembly for Wales, but as a result of a few legal challenges it has no formal status.
